EEG, Sleep & SUDEP: What People with Epilepsy and their Families Should Know Webinar

Event Date: October 21, 2026

Start Time: 12:00 pm

End Time: 1:30 pm

Join us on SUDEP Action Day 2026 for a one-and-a-half-hour in-depth webinar in partnership with the Epilepsy Foundation of America (EFA) focused on EEG, Sleep & SUDEP: What People with Epilepsy and their Families Should Know. This webinar will help people with epilepsy (PWE) and their families and caregivers understand three connected topics — EEG (electroencephalogram), sleep, and SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy) — and how each relates to overall health and seizure safety. Consistent with what people with epilepsy and caregivers say they want, this session leads with hope: most SUDEP risk factors are things attendees and their care teams can act on together.

The webinar will focus on practical, everyday steps—including questions to bring to your next appointment—so families leave with concrete tools, not just information.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand what an EEG measures, what SUDEP is, and how sleep connects to both — in plain language.
  • Build awareness so attendees feel confident asking their care team about EEG, sleep, and SUDEP—including when and how to raise it (guidelines recommend every person with epilepsy receive SUDEP information, ideally at diagnosis and from a trusted provider).
  • Identify sleep health strategies attendees can start using right away, including recognizing signs of sleep apnea and other sleep problems that can affect seizure control.
  • Learn concrete, evidence-based ways to lower SUDEP risk — optimizing seizure control and medication adherence, addressing nighttime safety, and knowing when to ask about referral to a specialized epilepsy center.
  • Gain self-management and stress-reduction tools (e.g., relaxation techniques, mindfulness, structured self-management strategies) shown to support mood, medication adherence, and quality of life.
  • Leave with a take-home “what to ask your care team” checklist and information on Seizure Action Plans.
  • See a brief, plain-language walkthrough of what an EEG recording looks like — shown only to demystify the test, not to teach interpretation.

Whether you’re newly diagnosed, have been living with epilepsy for years, or care for someone with epilepsy, this webinar is for you. Join us to learn, ask questions, and gain practical information and tools to help you feel more informed and confident as you navigate EEG, sleep, and SUDEP.

Continuing Education Credit:
Participants will earn one and a half (1.5) ASET Continuing Education Units (CEUs) upon attending. A valid ASET ID is required at registration to receive credit.
